MO Wastewater Treatment Operator Renewal Hour Requirements

Wastewater Treatment Operators in MO must complete 30 hours every 36 months under the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) - Operator Certification Unit.

Do your hours meet the requirement?

When is it due?

Every date that hangs off your renewal — hours deadline, application deadline, and the point of no return.

Expiration dates here are per-operator — enter yours and every deadline that hangs off it is computed for you.

Cycle and deadlines

Three years from issuance; dates are staggered per operator with no statewide renewal date.

All 30 hours must be obtained before the expiration date printed on the certificate - 10 CSR 20-9.030(4)(A). The CE window and the certificate term are the same three years.

When you renewFee
On or before expiration$45
1-60 days after expiration (training already complete)$45

Late window: 60 days after expiration.

The late window moves the application only — it does not extend the deadline for your hours.

Carryover: None — Verified zero, not merely unstated. 10 CSR 20-9.040(13): renewal credit is valid only for the renewal period in which it was earned, and credit in excess of the required hours may not be carried into any subsequent renewal training period.

Holding more than one certificate

Each certificate carries its own 30-hour requirement - the wastewater figure is set by 10 CSR 20-9.030(4)(B) and the drinking water figures sit in a separate chapter (10 CSR 60-14). One course session can carry approved hour values in more than one discipline at once, so a course approved for both wastewater and drinking water appears to feed both totals.

Worked example: An operator holding wastewater Level B and drinking water Level C who attends one 6.0 DW / 6.0 WW session appears to gain 6 hours on each total, not 6 hours split between them - but a wastewater-only session (6.0 WW) moves only the wastewater total, and a fluoridation class moves neither wastewater hour.

Will this course count?

Missouri approves individual course sessions, not providers. Each approval carries a course identification number and a stated credit amount, published per discipline on MoDNR's training calendar - so the same course can be worth 6.0 WW and 6.0 DW, or 6.0 WW and nothing else, or 4.0 DW and nothing for wastewater.

Check the course on the state’s approved-course list — approval is per course, not per provider.

10 CSR 20-9.040(9): a course may not be advertised as approved for renewal credit until MoDNR has issued formal approval, and any advertisement claiming approval must state the course identification number and the credit amount.

What Missouri calls these hours

Missouri counts Renewal Hours (hours of department-approved renewal training).

This......counts as
1.0 CEU issued by an organization meeting Council on the Continuing Education Unit criteria10 Renewal Hours

Does Missouri track your hours for you?

Yes — MoDNR Operator Certification System (OpCert) holds a record of your hours, and renewal depends on what it shows.

The state keeps a record, but it can lag or miss what you’ve earned — hours reach the state through channels you don’t control Keep your own certificates regardless.

Records and audits

Each certified operator is responsible for documenting his or her own training, and must submit suitable documentation of the 30 hours before the certificate is renewed. The rule assigns the duty and states no retention period or start date.

What happens if you miss it

Short on hours

Outcome: full requalification — including retaking and passing the exam.

Missed the renewal deadline

Outcome: full requalification — including retaking and passing the exam.

Grace window: 60 days.

Repeating a course

Not confirmed: whether a repeated course earns credit. Whether the same approved course may be taken again in a later renewal period and credited again. The rule addresses course re-approval and period validity but never addresses operator repetition.

Rules in motion

Not confirmed: whether rule changes are pending. No proposed amendment to 10 CSR 20-9 was found, but the Missouri Register was not searched directly. Do not state that no rulemaking is pending.

MoDNR transitions to standardized operator certification exams delivered under its existing contract with Water Professionals International, with a published crosswalk from Missouri's A-D and DS levels to the national classes. CAFO exams are exempt. Existing exams remain available until the switch.

Common questions

How many Renewal Hours do I need to renew a wastewater treatment operator certificate in Missouri?
30 Renewal Hours every 36 months.
Do I need more Renewal Hours for a higher grade?
No — Missouri requires the same Renewal Hours at every grade.
Can I carry extra hours over to the next cycle?
No — hours cannot be carried forward. Verified zero, not merely unstated. 10 CSR 20-9.040(13): renewal credit is valid only for the renewal period in which it was earned, and credit in excess of the required hours may not be carried into any subsequent renewal training period.
I hold more than one certificate — what does that do to my hours?
Each certificate carries its own 30-hour requirement - the wastewater figure is set by 10 CSR 20-9.030(4)(B) and the drinking water figures sit in a separate chapter (10 CSR 60-14). One course session can carry approved hour values in more than one discipline at once, so a course approved for both wastewater and drinking water appears to feed both totals.
Does Missouri keep a record of my hours for me?
Yes — MoDNR Operator Certification System (OpCert) holds a record, and renewal depends on what it shows. It can lag or miss what you've earned, so keep your own certificates regardless.
What happens if I come up short on hours?
The consequence is full requalification — including retaking and passing the exam.
What happens if I renew late?
You have 60 days after expiration to file. The late window moves the application only — it does not extend the deadline for your hours.
Can I renew without completing the hours?
No — Missouri offers no alternative path such as an exam in lieu of CE; completing the hours is the only way to renew.
